Getting started

What Termline is, and who does what

The idea the whole site is built on: your school does its own administration, and waits for nobody.

Services to Schools is where your school buys and manages the services City Council sells to schools: service level agreements, training, e-learning, consultancy, licences and the guidance that goes with them. It replaces the spreadsheet, the order form and, mostly, the email.

The idea behind it

One sentence decides nearly every design argument in this system: schools do their own administration, and the council does none of it.

That is not a slogan. It is why you can add a colleague at nine in the morning and have them working by five past, why declining a renewal is a switch rather than a letter, and why your number on roll is a field you edit rather than a figure somebody at the council keys in every September. Wherever this site could do something without a person in the middle, it does.

Where a person genuinely is needed you get one: the bubble in the corner of every page opens a conversation with City Council that never closes. It is there for questions, not for administration.

Who does what

There are four kinds of account, and they are about permission rather than job title.

RoleWhat it can do
School StaffUses the site. Can be given permission to book training, to spend, or both.
School AdminManages this school's people, contracts and spending.
Service LeadCouncil. Runs one or more service areas: their own catalogue, courses and content.
System AdminCouncil. Runs the whole platform: catalogue, users, content, finance and settings.

Most people at a school are School Staff. A School Business Manager is usually a School Admin. Both are permission roles, and neither is the same thing as what you do: being the Designated Safeguarding Lead or a fire marshal is a staff role, which the compliance side of the site uses. The two are kept apart on purpose, because a fire marshal should not need the keys to the finance pages.

What is here

  • The catalogue: everything City Council offers, in one place, grouped by what it is.
  • Training: courses with dates, places and a register.
  • E-learning: modules you work through in the browser, with certificates that expire when they should.
  • Guidance: written material and documents, some reserved for subscribers.
  • Your school: your people, contracts, spending and compliance.

What this guide is, and is not

This guide explains the site. It ships inside the software, so when the software changes the guide changes with it.

Guidance is a different thing and worth not confusing with it: that is written by City Council's own service teams about subjects rather than about screens, such as safeguarding, employment law and information governance. If you want advice, it is there. If you want to know which button does what, you are in the right place.

If something here is wrong

Say so in the bubble. A page describing a screen that has since changed is worse than no page at all, and the fastest way that gets fixed is somebody noticing and saying so.

Not what you were after?

Ask City Council in the bubble at the corner of any page, or open your help conversation in full. It is one conversation that never closes, so there is nothing to raise and no subject line to invent.
