Changing your mind about a renewal
There is a window, it is shown as a countdown, and inside it nothing is final.

A renewal decision is reversible for a stated period. This page is about that window: what it is, how you know where you are in it, and what happens at the end.
The window
Every renewal carries a date after which the decision is final. Until then, setting the switch the other way is enough — there is nothing to undo and nothing to apologise for. Changing it twice is fine.
The renewals page shows the window as a countdown rather than as a date: "you can change this for another 23 days". A date makes somebody do arithmetic against today, and somebody doing arithmetic against today at half past four on a Friday gets it wrong.
Reinstating something you declined
Inside the window, switch it back and it renews. The page tells you what that means before you do it: the service, the term it will run for, and the price, net, VAT and gross.
Changing your mind about renewing
The same in reverse, with the same statement of what follows. Declining inside the window leaves nothing behind: no part-year charge and no cancellation.
After the window closes
The decision is final and the page says so. It stops being a switch and becomes a statement of what was decided, with the date it was decided and by whom.
Reversing after that is a conversation rather than a click, and the honest position is that it may not be possible: a service area has by then planned its year around the answers it was given. Ask in the help bubble with the contract open, early rather than late.
Why there is a window at all
Because a decision worth making in June is often worth revisiting in July, when the budget is settled and the staffing is known. A system with no window makes schools delay every decision to the last possible day, which is worse for everybody: the council learns nothing until the deadline and the school still decides in a hurry.
